About the position

The Bison Reproductive Scientist oversees Colossal's bison assisted reproduction program. This role will bring strong reproductive science expertise to the company to build ground-breaking tools, techniques, and protocols for assisted reproduction in bison, exotic ungulates, and non-model species. This role works with the Head of Animal Husbandry, and the Assisted Reproduction and Husbandry teams to develop, implement, and maintain strategic plans for the advancement of ungulate ARTs. This position reports to Colossal's Head of Animal Husbandry. This position will be based out of Dallas, TX with approximately 25% travel required. Relocation assistance is available. Colossal is looking for a talented researcher to spearhead groundbreaking research on optimizing techniques of superovulation, ovum pick up, embryo flush, embryo transfer, and cryopreservation of reproductive materials in bison and other non-model species. The successful candidate will research and develop tools, techniques, and protocols to standardize assisted reproductive procedures such as superovulation, ovum pick up, and embryo transfer as part of Colossal's de-extinction efforts. The role involves partnering with colleagues and experts in reproductive and conservation sciences to enhance Colossal's research and collaborating directly with Colossal's species teams. Additionally, the Bison Reproductive Scientist will serve as an R&D leader and ambassador in support of Colossal's efforts to develop meaningful, productive, and mutually beneficial partnerships with the greater bison community, including indigenous partners, ranches, zoos, conservation organizations, and government agencies. This includes lending expertise and skills in assisted reproduction and cryopreservation to partners as part of formalized relationships and providing support in the development and execution of Colossal's conservation strategy and efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Spearhead groundbreaking research on optimizing techniques of superovulation, ovum pick up, embryo flush, embryo transfer, and cryopreservation of reproductive materials in bison and other non-model species.

Requirements

  • Experience with assisted reproduction techniques (including embryo flush, embryo transfer, and ovum pick up) in bison and/or domestic cattle.
  • Expertise in reproductive science and conservation.
  • Knowledge of and connections in the bison and ARTs communities are preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Practiced interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and passion for building relationships across all levels of an organization and with outside partners.
  • Ability to function well in a growth-oriented, nimble environment.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • BA/BS/MA/MS/DVM/PHD in biological sciences, veterinary medicine, or any science related field.
  • 8+ years of applied reproductive science experience with bison and/or domestic cattle strongly preferred.
  • Leadership experience preferred.
