About the position

The Registered Nurse Cardiothoracic (CT) Surgery Stepdown position is primarily focused on the recovery of patients who have undergone cardiac and thoracic surgeries. This role is situated in Lerner Tower 3, which specializes in cardiac and pulmonary surgical stepdown care. The nurse will provide postoperative care for patients who have had open-heart surgery, emphasizing pain management, mobility, and pulmonary toileting. It is common for patients to have chest tube drains and temporary pacemakers, necessitating a high level of nursing expertise and vigilance. In addition to caring for postoperative heart surgery patients, the stepdown unit also accommodates heart and lung transplant patients once they are stable enough to leave the ICU. The nursing care in this setting is critical, as it involves monitoring and managing complex medical needs. Thoracic surgeries, which may include procedures to remove masses, fluid, or air from the pleural space, are also a focus. The nurse will be responsible for managing pain, facilitating mobility, and ensuring proper pulmonary care, including tube feeding for patients recovering from esophagectomies. The stepdown unit consists of 9 beds and requires high-level, frequent assessments and monitoring, similar to those performed in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU). This includes monitoring arterial pressures, swan lines, and managing post-open heart procedure care, including the titration of intravenous drips.
